Find a mutilated corpse, search it to find a staff and instructions on empowering it.
After you have defeated the beast and taken the staff, you can do the following to get a A golden ring.

There will be a short narrative, ending in You hear an ear-piercing death cry and suddenly it's quiet again!, once you have seen this.

You will begin to empower the staff now (it will be out of your hands, and you will not be able to retrieve it until after a battle in a second, so now would be a good time to wield your weapon). You will see the message There is a scrambling sound behind you and the hairs on your neck rise as a deep throaty growl makes you drop the staff in surprise and leap to your feet!. You will now be attacked by A terrible beast. Once it is dead.
