Ask the sawmill boss about the job, listen to his instructions, then get to work. He'll pay on delivery of finished lumber.
You can complete this quest multiple times (though you will only get one axe) back to back for extra rewards (You will also only get the quest point once per reset), once you see The tree has already been felled! in A nearly barren copse of trees when trying to chop the tree, then the area has been cleared and you will have to wait until the quest resets.

The sawmill boss will give you A sharp logging axe and tell you to get to work (Narl says in Westron: Interested in helping me, eh? Well, thank you. Here's an axe, there are trees out in the worksite. When you're done, bring the finished board back to me.).

You will now chop down a tree leaving A freshly cut log (You go over and hack down a tree. Unfortunately, the tree was partly rotten and broke into numerous pieces when it fell down, leaving only one good log.).

You will now have to wait for a short period until you see After what seems like an eternity, you finish debarking the log. and you end up with A stripped log.

You now have to wait until you see After what seems like forever and a mounting pile of sawdust later, you're finally finished sawing the log into a board. and you get A clean-cut board.
do w,s,heat board
You now need to wait until you see After a short while, you pull the board out of the kiln and place the cool end inside. After waiting a little longer, it's done. and you get A smooth, clean-cut board.
