You can get to In the boughs of an old willow whilst the village is not on fire. If someone else is in this room you can push them into the river, forcing them to swim to safety. There is a chance whilst doing this to fail and fall into the river yourself.

If you wanted to swim through the rapids without rescuing the girl then you can simply fall into the river.

First the village must be burning (via Setting fire to Ethring), once it is you need to climb the tree.

You should find A young girl looks at you with fear in her eyes. You will need to swim for almost all of this quest, so you should make sure you have plenty of endurance and are unencumbered.

Now you should follow the instructions for the rapids in Ethring: Rickety Old Boat however you will be swimming for the entire time instead of being in a boat.
