The gem cannot be given away and will remain with you until you sell it.
If you are not a dwarf, when you die you will be taken to the valley of the dead to complete a slightly different quest where you meet with Mandos to plead your innocence, this does not have a reward (other than regaining your life).
If a dwarf dies during any of the quests below they will be taken to Mahals workshop to meet Mahal. You will complete a short quest. Once you have completed this quest you will be given a black reward.
Once you have died you will see You feel your spirit soaring through the heavens to parts unknown.. After a short period of waiting you will see Slowly, your eyes regain their vision, and you become aware of your surroundings. At first, all you see is a soft glitter that envelops you..

You will meet A dwarf labours near a workbench who will give you a message Durin says to you: You're here a bit prematurely, aren't you, <Your name here>? You'd better go see the master. He's beyond yon door there..

Here you will meet Mahal who will tell you return you to life. After you have been restored to life if you are a dwarf you will see Mahal gives you a black gem. Mahal ruffles your hair. and you will have your reward.
